Permax

Permax (also known as Pergolide) is a dopamine receptor used to treat Parkinson's disease. On March 29th, 2007, the FDA requested that the drug be completely withdrawn from the market due to its connection with heart valve problems.

Permanent heart valve damage can cause leakage, backflow of blood and heart failure. Surgery is the only way to treat the condition. Studies suggest that up to one in four patients who have used Permax have heart valve problems. Another study found that Permax patients were 5 to 7 times more likely to experience leaky heart valves than patients using other Parkinson’s Disease drugs.

The most serious signs of possible heart valve damage caused by Permax are fatigue, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations.
